Sobering thought about democracy as the Tories gather

Here is something for the Tories to consider at their conference this week.

According to The Economist (September 15th, p11) only a third of Americans under 35 say that it is vital that they live in a democracy. The share who would welcome military government grew from 7% in 1995 to 18% last year.

The time has come for voters and political leaders to start working towards common ground and solutions for the longer term. It is the obsessive partisanship in the USA which is driving disillusionment.
